Why Isn't This Being Investigated or Charged Yet?

The Lucas County Prosecutor's Office understands how important it is to seek justice when a crime occurs. However, it is important to know that the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office cannot initiate an investigation or file charges until a police report has been filed with the appropriate law enforcement agency.

  1. File a Police Report: If you believe a crime has been committed, your first step is to report it to your police department or other law enforcement agency where the crime occured.

  2. If the crime committed occured in an unincorporated area or village within Lucas County, the report should be filed with the Lucas County Sheriff's Office. If the crime occured in a municipality, it should be filed with the law enforcement agency in that municipality.

  3. Law Enforcement Investigation: The police will investigate the report, gather evidence and interview witnesses.

  4. Referral to the Prosecutor’s Office: Once their investigation is complete, law enforcement will refer the case to the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, providing us with the evidence and reports needed to review the case and decide whether charges are appropriate. Without a police report, we do not have the authority or the information necessary to investigate or pursue criminal charges.
